Verrettes

Artibonite, Haiti

Why visit Verrettes?

Verrettes is a market town in the Artibonite department, located approximately 20 km east of Dessalines along the road that leads into the Artibonite Valley interior. The town is best known for its lively Wednesday and Saturday markets, which draw vendors and buyers from across the surrounding agricultural region. The market features fresh produce, livestock (including a bustling donkey lot), household goods, and artisanal products — it is one of the most authentic rural market experiences in Haiti.

Verrettes has a population of roughly 50,000 and serves as a commercial hub for the surrounding rice-growing communities. The town sits on the Artibonite River floodplain, surrounded by irrigated rice paddies and small farms. The climate is tropical, with temperatures averaging 28–33°C (82–91°F) and a rainy season from April to June and August to October.
