Terre-Neuve

Artibonite, Haiti

Why visit Terre-Neuve?

Terre-Neuve is a mountainous commune in the interior of the Artibonite department, located in the highlands northeast of Gonaïves. The town sits at an elevation of approximately 600 m (2,000 ft), surrounded by pine forests, coffee plantations, and subsistence farms. The cooler mountain climate (20–26°C / 68–79°F) provides relief from the heat of the Artibonite Valley below. The population is roughly 20,000, and the economy centres on coffee cultivation, root crops, and small-scale agriculture.

The landscape is rugged and heavily deforested in places, though reforestation efforts have restored some pine and hardwood forests in the surrounding hills. The roads to Terre-Neuve are unpaved and challenging, requiring a 4x4 vehicle, especially during the rainy season.
