Petite Riviere de l'Artibonite

Artibonite, Haiti

Why visit Petite Riviere de l'Artibonite?

Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite is a historically significant town in the Artibonite department, located on the Artibonite River in the interior of the department. The town is one of the oldest settlements in the Artibonite Valley and played a role in Haiti's colonial and revolutionary history. The population is roughly 25,000, and the economy centres on agriculture, small-scale commerce, and fishing from the Artibonite River.

The town is situated near the Péligre Dam (Barrage de Péligre), which created Lac de Péligre — Haiti's largest artificial lake — on the upper Artibonite River. The dam, built in the 1950s with US funding, provides hydroelectric power and irrigation water for the Artibonite Valley, though its construction displaced communities and flooded agricultural land.

The climate is tropical, with temperatures averaging 27–32°C (81–90°F) and a rainy season from April to June and August to October.
