Marmelade

Artibonite, Haiti

Why visit Marmelade?

Marmelade is a scenic mountain commune in the Artibonite department, located in the highlands approximately 30 km northeast of Gonaïves. The town sits at an elevation of roughly 600 m (2,000 ft), surrounded by coffee plantations, pine forests, and lush mountain scenery. The population is roughly 20,000, and the economy centres on coffee cultivation, subsistence farming, and small-scale commerce.

Marmelade gained international attention through development projects, including an Italian NGO-funded programme that supported coffee cooperatives, reforestation, and community development. The town is known for its cool climate (18–25°C / 64–77°F), scenic beauty, and high-quality Haitian coffee. The landscape features a mix of reforested hillsides, coffee terraces, and panoramic viewpoints over the Artibonite Valley.
