About Surami

Surami (Georgian: სურამი) is a mountain spa village in the Shida Kartli region, located at the Surami Pass about 10 km north of Khashuri. It is known for the Surami Fortress (also called the Surami Castle), a 17th-century fortification that is one of the most photographed sites in Kartli. Surami was a favourite summer retreat of the Russian imperial family and has a mild mountain climate.

How to reach

By car

Surami is on the road north from Khashuri toward the Racha region — about 15 minutes.

By bus

Marshrutkas from Khashuri run regularly.

The village is walkable. The fortress is on a hill above the village.

Things to do

The Surami Fortress (17th century) is the main attraction — a well-preserved fortification with a tall tower offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The Surami Church. The narrow-gauge railway that passes through town.
