Overview

Georgia is one of the oldest Christian nations in the world — Christianity was adopted in 337 AD — and one of the most geographically dramatic: the Caucasus mountains in the north (including Mount Shkhara, 5,193m) descend through wine valleys, ancient monastery landscapes, and subtropical coast to the Black Sea. Georgia has emerged as one of Europe's most dynamic travel destinations in the 2010s–2020s, driven by its extraordinary food and wine culture, its UNESCO heritage, and an authentic hospitality tradition (Georgian supra feasts can be multi-hour events with dozens of dishes and toasting rituals).

Georgia is the birthplace of wine (recent evidence suggests winemaking here 8,000 years ago; the UNESCO-listed Kvevri winemaking method uses clay vessels buried underground). The country's 500+ grape varieties include internationally acclaimed Saperavi and Rkatsiteli.

Geography & Climate

Georgia covers 69,700 km² between the Greater Caucasus (border with Russia) and the Lesser Caucasus (border with Armenia and Turkey), with the Black Sea coast to the west. Three distinct zones: the subtropical western coast (Adjara, Colchis), the central Kartli and Kakheti valleys, and the high mountain regions (Svaneti, Tusheti, Kazbegi). Climate: subtropical in the west (Batumi averages 14°C year-round; very rainy); continental with cold winters in Tbilisi; alpine in the mountains.

Getting Around

Marshrutky (shared minibuses) are the primary intercity transport; frequent, cheap, and covering most destinations. The Tbilisi metro is excellent. Taxis and Bolt/Yango operate in cities. Renting a car allows exploration of Kakheti wine country and the mountain roads. The Tbilisi–Kutaisi–Batumi train is scenic and comfortable.

Culture & Etiquette

Georgian hospitality is legendary and sincere: a guest is "sent by God" (stumari Ghvtis mier mogzavnilia). The supra (feast) is presided over by a tamada (toastmaster) who leads elaborate toasts; refusing to drink is acceptable with a polite explanation. Never enter a church without covering heads/shoulders. The Georgian Orthodox Church is deeply important to national identity; show respect at religious sites. Georgia has a strong nightlife culture (Tbilisi's Bassiani club is world-renowned); but also deeply traditional village life — these coexist without contradiction.

Safety

Generally very safe. Street crime is rare by European standards. The regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia (occupied by Russia) are absolutely off-limits; approaching them is extremely dangerous. Mountain hiking: standard mountain safety rules; the Caucasus is serious terrain.
