Gantiadi

Gantiadi (Abkhaz: Гантиади, Russian: Гантиади, Georgian: განთიადი) is a small coastal settlement in the Gagra District of Abkhazia, located near the Russian border just south of the Psou River crossing. Formerly known as Tsandripsh (Цандрипш), it is a quiet beach area with a mix of private homes, guesthouses, and small resorts. Its proximity to the Russian border and to Gagra makes it a convenient stop for travellers crossing into or out of Abkhazia.

By car

Gantiadi is on the M-27 highway, about 2 km south of the Psou River border crossing from Russia. It is the first settlement in Abkhazia after crossing from Adler/Sochi.

By bus

Marshrutkas running between the Russian border and Gagra all pass through Gantiadi. The journey from the border is about 5 minutes; from Gagra about 15 minutes.

The settlement is stretched along the coast but is walkable. Taxis are available for trips to Gagra or the border.

The main attraction is the Black Sea coastline with its pebble beaches. The Psou River forms the border between Abkhazia and Russia. The ruins of a 6th-century Byzantine basilica can be found in the area.

Relax on the beach. Take a walk along the coast toward Gagra. Visit the border observation points to watch the crossing traffic.

Small roadside cafés serve basic Abkhaz and Russian dishes. For a wider selection, head 15 minutes south to Gagra.

Bottled drinks are available at local shops.

Market stalls near the border crossing sell Abkhaz honey, fruit, and souvenirs — often at higher prices than further into Abkhazia.
