Clermont-Ferrand is the historic capital of Auvergne and the largest city in the Massif Central. It is famously the home of the Michelin tyre company, and its striking black lava-stone Gothic cathedral dominates the skyline. Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport (CFE) offers flights to Paris, Lyon, and several European destinations. The Intercités train connects Clermont-Ferrand to Paris in about 3.5 hours. TER services connect to Lyon, Limoges, and Toulouse. The A71, A75, and A89 autoroutes serve the city.
The city has a tram line (Line A) and an extensive bus network. The historic centre is compact and walkable. The streets climb steeply from the central Place de Jaude. A car is useful for exploring the surrounding volcanoes.

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral, built in black Volvic stone, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The Basilique Notre-Dame du Port is a UNESCO-listed Romanesque church.
