Why visit Grenoble?

Grenoble is a major academic and research centre in the French Alps, surrounded by three mountain massifs: the Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne. How do you get there?

Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport (GNB) serves limited European routes. The TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon reaches Grenoble in 3 hours. Regular TER trains connect Grenoble to Lyon (1h15), Chambéry (45 min), and Valence (1h). The A48 and A480 autoroutes provide road access.

The Grenoble tram network (five lines) and bus system serve the city and suburbs. The city centre is compact and walkable. The Bastille cable car (les Bulles) provides panoramic views. Bicycle hire is available through the Métrovélo scheme.

The Bastille fortress offers panoramic views of the city and mountains. The Musée de Grenoble houses an impressive collection of fine art. The Jardin de Ville is the city's oldest public park. The cable car across the Isère is an iconic sight.

Hike or mountain bike in the Chartreuse and Vercors massifs directly accessible from the city. Ski at Chamrousse, site of the 1968 Olympic events. Visit the Chartreuse distillery near Voiron. Explore the Musée Dauphinois for regional history.

Where to eat?

Grenoble is the capital of the Dauphiné region. Local specialities include gratin dauphinois, ravioles du Dauphiné, and Saint-Marcellin cheese. The city's markets offer excellent local produce. Walnuts from Grenoble have AOC status.

Where to drink?

The Chartreuse liqueur, produced by monks since 1737, is the region's most famous drink. Local wines from the Grésivaudan valley complement the cuisine.
