Sidama is a regional state in southern Ethiopia, separated from SNNPR in 2020. It surrounds the city of Hawassa (the regional capital) and extends south toward the Rift Valley lakes. The Sidama people have a distinct language and a rich tradition of coffee cultivation.
The landscape ranges from the shores of Lake Hawassa through green highlands to the Rift Valley escarpment. Coffee dominates the economy — Sidama coffee is considered among the world's finest.
When is the best time to visit?
October to March is dry and pleasant. The rainy season (June–September) brings heavy downpours but the landscape is at its most beautiful.

Sidama cuisine centres on coffee, which is consumed with meals and in ceremonies. False banana (kocho) is a staple, alongside the usual injera and wat. Sidama butter coffee (coffee with clarified butter and salt) is a local speciality.
What is the culture like?
The Sidama New Year (Fichee-Chambalaalla) is celebrated in October with feasting, music, and dance. The Sidama are known for their traditional democracy (the Songo assembly) and their distinctive woven cotton clothing.
