Semera
Afar, Ethiopia
Why visit Semera?
Semera is the capital of the Afar Region in north-eastern Ethiopia, founded in the early 2000s as a planned administrative centre. Unlike the historic former capital Asaita further north, Semera was built from scratch to house regional government offices and services. The town sits in a semi-arid lowland environment with very hot temperatures year-round, typical of the Afar Depression.
The population is predominantly Afar, a traditionally pastoralist people with a distinct culture and language. Semera serves as a base for travellers heading into the Danakil Depression and other Afar attractions, though it has limited tourist infrastructure compared to larger Ethiopian cities.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest airport with scheduled services is Kombolcha Airport (DSE IATA) in Kombolcha, about 250 km west. From there, taxis and buses connect to Semera. There is no commercial airport in Semera itself.
By Car / Road
Semera is connected by road to Logiya (about 10 km south) along Highway 1, which runs north from Adama through Awash to the Afar interior. The drive from Addis Ababa takes about 10–12 hours (550 km). Road conditions vary; the paved sections are decent but beyond the main highways, gravel and desert tracks dominate.
Semera is a small, spread-out town where most movement is by shared minibus, bajaj (three-wheeled rickshaw), or private vehicle. Walking between government buildings and the main market area is feasible in the cooler early morning and evening hours.
What are the things to do?
Afar Regional Museum: A modest museum showcasing Afar culture, traditional artefacts, and the region's paleontological significance.
Semera Mosque: The town's main mosque and a local architectural landmark.
Government Complex: The modern administrative buildings that anchor the town's planned layout.
Lake Gemeri: A seasonal lake to the east that attracts birdlife during and after the rainy season.
Arrange Danakil expeditions: Semera is a logistical hub for organised tours into the Danakil Depression and Erta Ale volcano.
Visit Afar villages: Short trips from Semera offer insight into traditional Afar pastoralist life.
Birdwatching at seasonal wetlands: The surrounding areas attract flamingos and other waterbirds during the wet season.
