Asaita

Afar, Ethiopia

Why visit Asaita?

Asaita (also spelled Asayita) is a historic town in the Afar Region of north-eastern Ethiopia, lying along the Awash River. It served as the capital of the Afar Sultanate and was the regional administrative centre until the government moved the capital to Semera in the early 2000s. The town remains an important cultural and traditional centre for the Afar people.

Asaita sits in a hot, semi-arid lowland environment. Agriculture along the Awash River sustains the local economy, with cotton and fruit orchards being notable. The town has a relaxed, traditional character and is closer in feel to the historic Afar than the newer planned capital.
