Abala

Afar, Ethiopia

Why visit Abala?

Abala is the main town of Abala woreda, in Zone 2 of Ethiopia's Afar Region, sitting at the base of the eastern escarpment of the Ethiopian Highlands (bordering Tigray to the west). It is a small settlement — a population of under 5,000 at the last detailed count — but functions as an important regional trading center, especially for goats brought in by pastoralists from as far as Afdera, Erebti and Teru; the main market day is Thursday. The population is predominantly Afar and Muslim.
