Mankayane is a town in western Manzini Region, Eswatini, situated along the Mankayane River near the border with South Africa's Mpumalanga province. The climate is subtropical, with hot, rainy summers from November to March and mild, dry winters from May to August. How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest international airport is King Mswati III International Airport (SHO) near Manzini, approximately 60 km east. From there, a taxi to Mankayane costs around 400–600 SZL. Alternatively, O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg is 350 km west.

By Car / Road

Mankayane lies on the MR9 road, about 45 km west of Manzini city and 30 km east of the Ngwenya/Oshoek border post with South Africa. Minibus services run from Manzini's main rank (approx. 1 hour, 40 SZL).

The town is walkable. For trips to nearby farms or villages, shared taxis and minibuses are available from the central rank. Hiring a private taxi for the day costs around 300–500 SZL.

  • Mankayane Sugar Mill — A major sugar processing plant; views of the facility and surrounding cane fields from nearby roads.

Where to eat?

Eateries in Mankayane are limited. Small restaurants serve basic Swazi staples: pap (maize porridge) with meat stew, grilled chicken, and fresh vegetables.

Where to drink?

Local shebeens (informal bars) serve traditional home-brewed beer (umcombotsi) and commercially bottled lagers. Tea and soft drinks are available at cafés and general stores. Tap water is generally safe in Mankayane, but bottled water is recommended.

Roadside craft stalls sell sisal baskets, carved wooden animals, and traditional Swazi textiles. The produce market offers seasonal fruits and vegetables at low prices. Bargaining is customary at craft stalls but not for basic goods.
