Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Manzini, Eswatini

Why visit Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary?

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Eswatini's oldest protected area, established in 1954 by conservationist Ted Reilly on land formerly used for farming and tin mining. It covers 4,560 hectares in the Ezulwini Valley ("Valley of Heaven"), with a mix of grassland, woodland, and wetland habitat, and takes its name — meaning "Little Fire" — from the lightning-sparked fires that used to burn on nearby Mlilwane Hill. It is Eswatini's most-visited reserve, known for approachable wildlife including zebra, antelope, hippo and crocodile, and for its traditional "beehive hut" rest camp accommodation.
