Karla
Saaremaa, Estonia
Why visit Karla?
Karla is a small village in central Saaremaa, located about 15 km north of Kuressaare. It is a quiet agricultural settlement surrounded by farmland, forests, and the gentle rolling landscape that characterises the interior of Estonia's largest island. The name "Karla" is thought to derive from an old Estonian personal name.
The village is typical of rural Saaremaa: a cluster of houses around a crossroads, with a local shop, a bus stop, and a community centre. Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons — planting in spring, haymaking in summer, harvesting in autumn, and a quiet winter. The area is known for its dairy farming and crop production.
For travellers, Karla is not a destination in itself but a tranquil stop along the road between Kuressaare and the northern parts of the island. The village is well-placed for visiting the Kaali meteorite crater, one of Saaremaa's most famous natural and historical attractions. The best time to visit is May–September.
