Kihelkonna
Saaremaa, Estonia
Why visit Kihelkonna?
Kihelkonna is a historic village on the north-western coast of Saaremaa island, about 40 km north-west of Kuressaare. With a population of around 500, it is one of the island's most historically significant settlements, having been a parish centre since the Middle Ages. The name "Kihelkonna" means "parish" in Estonian, reflecting its role as the religious and administrative centre of western Saaremaa.
The village grew around its medieval church, which is one of the largest and most impressive on the island. Kihelkonna was also an important fishing and shipping centre, with a small harbour that once connected the village to the mainland and other Baltic ports. The surrounding landscape is characterised by juniper heaths, coastal meadows, and the dramatic western coastline of Saaremaa.
For travellers, Kihelkonna is a peaceful base for exploring the western part of the island, including Vilsandi National Park and the Kiipsaare Lighthouse. Its historic church and quiet seaside atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop on a Saaremaa road trip. The best time to visit is June–August.
