Muhu
Saaremaa, Estonia
Why visit Muhu?
Muhu is the third-largest island in Estonia, located between the mainland and Saaremaa, connected to both by the Väinatamm causeway and bridge. It is administratively part of Saaremaa county but has a distinct identity and culture. The island is relatively flat, covered in farmland, forests, and juniper heaths, with a coastline of reedy shallows, small harbours, and rocky shores.
Muhu has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and its isolation has preserved a strong local culture. The island is famous for its folk traditions, including distinctive handicrafts (particularly Muhu knitwear), traditional cuisine, and folk music. The Muhu people are known for their independent spirit, and the island has a relaxed, rural rhythm that feels a world away from the mainland. Agriculture, fishing, and tourism are the main economic activities.
For travellers, Muhu is the gateway to Saaremaa (the ferry from the mainland arrives at Kuivastu on Muhu), but it is well worth exploring in its own right. The traditional villages, the open-air museum, the excellent local food, and the peaceful countryside make it a delightful stop. The best time to visit is May–September.

By Plane
Kuressaare Airport (URE) is 75 km south-west via the Muhu–Saaremaa causeway.
By Train
There is no railway on Muhu. The nearest railway station is on the mainland at Pärnu or Lihula.
By Car / Road
From the mainland, take the ferry from Virtsu to Kuivastu (25 minutes, frequent daily sailings). The ferry arrives on Muhu island. Driving from Tallinn to Kuivastu via the ferry takes about 2.5–3 hours. From Kuressaare on Saaremaa, drive north across the Väinatamm causeway (60 km, 1 hour). Buses from Tallinn and Kuressaare serve Muhu.
By Ferry on Foot
Foot passengers can walk onto the ferry at Virtsu without a vehicle. On Muhu, buses meet the ferry to connect to Kuressaare and other destinations.
Muhu is best explored by car or bicycle. The island is about 20 km long and 10 km wide, with quiet roads suitable for cycling. A limited bus service connects the main villages.
