Koguva

Saaremaa, Estonia

Why visit Koguva?

Koguva is one of the most picturesque and well-preserved traditional villages in Estonia, located on the western coast of Muhu island — the island between Saaremaa and the mainland. With a population of just a few dozen permanent residents, Koguva is an open-air museum of traditional Estonian island architecture, with over 50 historic farm buildings dating from the 18th to 20th centuries.

What makes Koguva special is its authenticity. Unlike many open-air museums that have been reconstructed elsewhere, Koguva is a living village where the buildings stand in their original locations, surrounded by the same fields and coast that the villagers worked for centuries. The village was saved from modern development by a preservation order in the 1970s, and it has been carefully maintained as a cultural heritage site. The famous Estonian writer Juhan Smuul grew up here, and his childhood home is now a museum.

For travellers, Koguva offers a unique glimpse into the pre-industrial island life of the Baltic Sea. The stone-walled farmyards, thatched roofs, and winding lanes create a timeless atmosphere that is both beautiful and moving. The best time to visit is May–September; the village is liveliest in summer.
