About Jarva-Jaani
Järva-Jaani is a small borough (alevik) in northern Järvamaa, with a population of about 1,000, situated approximately 20 km north of Paide. The settlement developed around the historic Järva-Jaani Church, a medieval stone church built in the 13th century that remains the focal point of the community. The church is dedicated to Saint John (Jaani in Estonian), giving the settlement its name. The surrounding landscape is classic Järvamaa: rolling agricultural fields, patches of forest, and small lakes.
Järva-Jaani's history stretches back to the Danish period of northern Estonia in the 13th century, when the church was established as part of the Christianisation of the region. The settlement later grew around the church and manor estate, serving as a local centre for the surrounding parish. Today, Järva-Jaani is a quiet residential and farming community, offering visitors a glimpse of rural Estonian life and the opportunity to see one of Järvamaa's oldest buildings.
The best time to visit is May–September, when the church is open and the countryside is at its most attractive.
