Pussi

Ida-Virumaa, Estonia

Why visit Pussi?

Püssi is a small town in Ida-Virumaa county, located about 10 km west of Jõhvi. With a population of roughly 1,000, it is one of the smallest towns in Estonia, yet it carries a distinct industrial history. The town grew around a railway station and a timber processing plant, which for decades was the main employer in the area.

The name "Püssi" means "gun" in Estonian, and local legend suggests the name derives from the shape of the nearby river bend. The town was officially granted town status in 1993, making it one of Estonia's youngest municipalities. Since the decline of the timber industry, Püssi has faced economic challenges, but the surrounding forests and quiet countryside offer a peaceful stop for travellers exploring Ida-Virumaa's lesser-known corners.

For visitors, Püssi is a brief stop rather than a destination in itself — it offers a glimpse of post-industrial small-town life in rural Estonia. The best time to visit is May–September.
