Avinurme

Ida-Virumaa, Estonia

Why visit Avinurme?

Avinurme is a small settlement in southern Ida-Virumaa county, located about 25 km south of Jõhvi. It is a quiet rural village surrounded by forests, lakes, and agricultural land, far from the industrial landscapes that dominate the northern part of the county. The name Avinurme reflects the area's historical character as a remote forested region.

The area has a long history of Estonian traditional culture, particularly in woodworking and handicrafts. Avinurme is known for its local craft traditions, and the surrounding forests provide ample opportunities for foraging, hiking, and nature observation. The village is also close to several lakes that are popular for swimming and fishing in summer.

For travellers, Avinurme offers a peaceful rural stop with a glimpse of traditional Estonian village life. It works well as a quiet base for exploring the less-visited southern parts of Ida-Virumaa. The best time to visit is May–September.
