About Senafe
Senafe is a market town in the southern Debub Region, on the edge of the Eritrean highlands near the Ethiopian border. It is best known as the gateway to the Matara archaeological site, one of the most important ancient sites in Eritrea. Matara was a major city during the Dʿmt and Aksumite kingdoms, and its ruins include the Hawulti obelisk, the oldest known example of Ge'ez script (4th century AD). The town itself sits at an elevation of about 2,400 m, giving it a cool highland climate.
