Awsim

Al Jīzah, Egypt

Why visit Awsim?

Awsim (Ausim) sits on the site of ancient Letopolis, known in Egyptian as Khem, once capital of Lower Egypt's second nome. It was a center of worship for Khenty-irty (also Khenti-kheti), a form of the god Horus, with religious references dating back to the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BC); the surviving monuments at the site date to Late Period pharaohs including Necho II, Psamtik II, Hakor, and Nectanebo I. Modern Awsim, about 12 km northwest of central Cairo on the Delta's western edge, has grown into a dense suburban town fully absorbed into Greater Cairo.
