Mao

Cibao Noroeste, Dominican Republic

Why visit Mao?

Mao (officially Santa Cruz de Mao) is the capital of the Valverde province in the Cibao Noroeste region, located in the fertile Yaque del Norte River valley. With a population of around 60,000, it is the largest and most important city in the northwest Dominican Republic, serving as the commercial, agricultural, and administrative hub of the region.

The city sits on the flat plains of the Yaque del Norte valley, surrounded by rice paddies, tobacco fields, and plantain groves. Mao has a lively, provincial character with a well-maintained central park, active market culture, and a growing urban infrastructure. The city is known locally for its agricultural fairs and its role as a gateway to the Cordillera Central mountains to the south.

The climate is hot and semi-arid, with temperatures averaging 26–35°C — one of the hottest cities in the Dominican Republic. Rainfall is limited, concentrated in the May–October period. The dry season (November–April) is the most comfortable time to visit.
