Castanuelas
Cibao Noroeste, Dominican Republic
Why visit Castanuelas?
Castañuelas is a small municipality in the Monte Cristi province of the Cibao Noroeste region, located near the Haitian border in the dry northwest of the Dominican Republic. With a population of around 10,000, it is a quiet, remote agricultural town surrounded by dry scrubland, pasture, and rice paddies. The town has a frontier character, influenced by its proximity to Haiti and the arid landscape of the northwest.
The surrounding terrain is flat and dry, part of the semi-arid lowlands that characterize the DR's northwest. The economy is based on agriculture (rice, beans, livestock) and cross-border trade. Castañuelas is not a tourist destination but offers a glimpse into the remote, frontier communities of the Dominican northwest.
The climate is hot and semi-arid, with temperatures averaging 27–36°C. Rainfall is minimal.
