Monte Cristi National Park

Cibao Noroeste, Dominican Republic

Why visit Monte Cristi National Park?

Monte Cristi National Park (Parque Nacional Monte Cristi) is a protected area in the northwest corner of the Dominican Republic, encompassing coastal mangroves, coral reefs, dry forest, and the dramatic El Morro de Monte Cristi — a flat-topped limestone mesa rising 240 meters above the sea. Established in 1983, the park covers approximately 550 km² and is one of the most ecologically diverse protected areas in the Caribbean.

The park's landscape is striking: the arid coastal lowlands give way to mangrove-lined estuaries, offshore cays with coral reefs, and the iconic El Morro cliff. The area is home to flamingos, pelicans, sea turtles, iguanas, and numerous endemic plant species adapted to the dry conditions. The park also protects significant Taíno archaeological sites.

The climate is hot and semi-arid, with temperatures averaging 27–35°C. The driest months are November through April; the rainy season (May–October) brings sporadic showers. The park can be visited year-round, though the dry season offers more comfortable conditions for hiking.
