Djolu

Tshuapa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Djolu?

Djolu is a town and territory in Tshuapa Province best known for its connection to bonobo conservation. Kokolopori, a community of about 35 villages within Djolu Territory, is home to the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, a roughly 4,875 km² protected area established in 2003 through agreements between local villages and the Congolese conservation group Vie Sauvage, with support from the Bonobo Conservation Initiative, and formally recognized by the DRC government in 2009. The reserve uses a community-based conservation model and is estimated to host between 1,000 and 1,800 bonobos, alongside an active research presence — the Kokolopori Bonobo Research Project, launched in 2016, is run by scientists from Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. The Kokolopori community itself is ethnically Mongandu and numbers roughly 24,000 people. As with the rest of Tshuapa Province, the wider local economy rests on subsistence agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trade, and the climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round with a wetter and drier season.
