Boende

Tshuapa, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Boende?

Boende is the capital of Tshuapa Province, on the Tshuapa River, with a population estimated around 36,000 as of 2009. It functions as a river port, with riverboat service connecting it to Kinshasa via Mbandaka, and has a local airport. During the 1964 Simba Rebellion, Boende was captured by mercenary forces, an episode documented in the 1966 film Africa Addio. As with the rest of Tshuapa Province, the wider local economy rests on agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trade, and the climate is tropical rainforest — hot, humid, and wet essentially year-round without sharp seasonal swings in temperature.
