Manicaragua

Villa Clara, Cuba

Why visit Manicaragua?

Manicaragua is a small town in southern Villa Clara province, Cuba, situated in the foothills of the Escambray Mountains approximately 50 km south of Santa Clara. Founded in 1713, it is one of the oldest settlements in the region. The town has a population of around 15,000 and serves as a gateway to the mountainous interior of the Escambray range.

The surrounding landscape transitions from flat agricultural lowlands in the north to the forested hills and valleys of the Escambray Mountains to the south. The area is known for coffee cultivation, introduced in the 19th century, as well as tobacco and citrus farming. The climate is tropical at lower elevations but becomes cooler and more humid in the mountains.

Manicaragua is not a tourist destination, but its proximity to the Escambray Mountains and the Hanabanilla Lake makes it a useful base for nature-oriented excursions. The town has a quiet, rural character with minimal commercial activity.
