Placetas

Villa Clara, Cuba

Why visit Placetas?

Placetas is a small city in central Villa Clara province, Cuba, located approximately 40 km east of Santa Clara. Founded in 1861, the town grew as a centre for sugar production and cattle ranching. With a population of around 30,000, Placetas is a typical Cuban provincial city — not a tourist destination, but an authentic example of everyday Cuban life in the interior.

The town is laid out around a central plaza with colonial-era buildings, a church, and municipal offices. The surrounding area is flat agricultural land, dominated by sugar cane fields and cattle ranches. The climate is tropical, with a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October.

Placetas is known locally for its annual carnival celebrations and for producing several notable Cuban musicians. The town has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and sees virtually no foreign tourists.
