Sagua la Grande
Villa Clara, Cuba
Why visit Sagua la Grande?
Sagua la Grande is a small city in northern Villa Clara province, Cuba, situated on the banks of the Sagua la Grande River approximately 30 km from the coast. Founded in 1812, the city grew wealthy in the 19th century from sugar production and became an important inland port connected to the coast by river navigation. The historic centre retains a number of colonial and early republican-era buildings, though many are in varying states of decay.
The city has a population of around 60,000 and serves as the administrative centre of the eponymous municipality. The surrounding area is predominantly agricultural, with sugar cane, tobacco, and livestock farming. The climate is tropical, with a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October.
Sagua la Grande is not a major tourist destination, but its authentic Cuban character and unrenovated colonial architecture make it of interest to travellers seeking to explore beyond the standard tourist circuit.
