About Batabano

Batabanó is a coastal municipality and town in Mayabeque Province, Cuba, situated on the southern coast approximately 60 km south of Havana on the shores of the Bay of Batabanó. The town has historically been a fishing port and the departure point for ferries to the Isle of Youth (Isla de la Juventud).

The municipality has a population of around 27,000 and combines a working fishing port character with small-town Cuban charm. The town centre has a central plaza, a parish church, and waterfront buildings. The bay is shallow and lined with mangroves, supporting a fishing industry that remains central to the local economy.

Tropical climate with coastal breezes. The wet season runs from May to October, with drier months from November to April. The southern coast can be hot and humid in summer.

How to reach

By Plane

José Martí International Airport (HAV) in Havana is the nearest airport, approximately 60 km north. A taxi costs around CUC 50–60 and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

By Train

By Car / Road

Batabanó is accessible from Havana via the Carretera Central and local roads through Güines. The drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Colectivos serve the route.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Bici-taxis provide local transport. For trips along the coast or to the ferry terminal, taxis are recommended.
