Playa Giron

Matanzas, Cuba

Why visit Playa Giron?

Playa Girón is a small coastal village on the southern shore of the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) in Matanzas province, Cuba. It is world-famous as the site where CIA-trained Cuban exiles landed on 17 April 1961, beginning the Bay of Pigs invasion — a pivotal event in Cold War history. The Cuban forces repelled the invasion within three days, and the event remains a source of national pride.

Today, Playa Girón is a quiet ecotourism destination within the Ciénaga de Zapata National Park, known for its excellent diving, pristine natural environment, and historical significance. The village has a small population and a handful of tourist facilities. The beach is a modest strip of sand backed by vegetation. The climate is tropical, averaging 24–30°C, with the dry season (November–April) being the best time to visit.
