Cardenas

Matanzas, Cuba

Why visit Cardenas?

Cárdenas is a port city in Matanzas province, Cuba, located on the northern coast about 120 km east of Havana and 30 km east of the resort town of Varadero. Founded in 1828, it quickly became one of Cuba's most prosperous cities due to its deep-water harbour and thriving sugar trade. The city is known for its wide boulevards, colonial architecture, and a distinctive character that blends industrial heritage with Cuban charm.

Cárdenas has a population of around 100,000 and is notable for being the city where the Cuban flag was first raised in 1850 during an independence uprising led by Narciso López. The city's layout features a grid pattern with wide streets, a central park, and several historic buildings. The climate is tropical, averaging 24–30°C, with the dry season (November–April) being the most comfortable time to visit.

Unlike nearby Varadero, Cárdenas sees relatively few tourists, offering a more authentic Cuban urban experience. The city is known for its horse-drawn carriages (the primary local transport), friendly residents, and as the birthplace of several notable Cuban figures.
