Playa Larga
Matanzas, Cuba
Why visit Playa Larga?
Playa Larga is a small beach village at the head of the Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) on Cuba's southern coast, in Matanzas province. Situated within the Ciénaga de Zapata National Park, it is known for its excellent diving, proximity to the Zapata Swamp's rich biodiversity, and its role in the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion. The village stretches along a thin strip of land between the bay and the wetlands.
Playa Larga has a tiny permanent population and caters primarily to nature tourists and divers. The beach itself is a narrow strip of greyish sand backed by mangroves and tropical vegetation. The climate is tropical, averaging 24–30°C, with the dry season (November–April) being the ideal time to visit.
