Jaguey Grande

Matanzas, Cuba

Why visit Jaguey Grande?

Jagüey Grande is a town in the southern part of Matanzas province, Cuba, located near the northern edge of the Ciénaga de Zapata (Zapata Swamp), one of the largest wetlands in the Caribbean. The town serves as a gateway to the Zapata Peninsula and the Bay of Pigs historical site. Founded in the 19th century, it has an economy based on agriculture, forestry, and increasingly, ecotourism.

Jagüey Grande has a population of around 20,000 and a tropical climate averaging 24–30°C. The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit, as the surrounding wetlands can be difficult to access during the wet season. The town is the main service centre for visitors to the Ciénaga de Zapata National Park.
