Manati

Las Tunas, Cuba

About Manati

Manatí is a small coastal town in northern Las Tunas Province, situated on the southern shore of the Bay of Manatí, near the Caribbean coast. With a population of around 10,000, it is a fishing and agricultural community that retains a quiet, authentic Cuban character. The town is virtually unknown to international tourists.

Manatí's economy is based on fishing and sugar cane cultivation. The bay provides a natural harbour for the local fishing fleet, and the surrounding flatlands are devoted to sugar and cattle. The climate is tropical, with hot summers (30–33°C) and a rainy season from May to October. The best months are November through April.

The town is laid out around a central area near the waterfront, with the usual complement of a park, church, and municipal buildings. The surrounding coastline includes mangrove areas and shallow bays.
