Photography coming soonOverview
Las Tunas is a province in eastern Cuba, often called "El Balcón del Oriente" (The Balcony of the East) for its position overlooking the coastal lowlands of the country's eastern half. The province stretches from the Atlantic coast in the north to the semi-arid interior in the south, encompassing a mix of flat sugarcane country, gentle hills, and long stretches of undeveloped coastline. Its capital, also called Las Tunas, is a mid-sized Cuban city known for its sculptures and public art.
This is not a province that draws mass tourism, which is precisely its charm. Las Tunas offers a window into everyday Cuban life far from the resort corridors — unhurried towns, local festivals, and quiet beaches where you are more likely to share the sand with fishermen than fellow visitors. The economy is rooted in sugar, cattle, and tobacco, and the landscape reflects that agricultural character.
Las Tunas province borders Holguín to the east, Camagüey to the west, and Granma to the southeast. The northern coast faces the Atlantic, while the southern reaches extend toward the Gulf of Guacanayabo. The terrain is predominantly flat, with the Cauto River basin forming part of its southern boundary.
When to Visit
The dry season (November–April) is the most comfortable time to visit, with lower humidity, little rain, and temperatures averaging 24–28°C. The wet season (May–October) brings heavier rainfall, especially in June and September–October, and occasional tropical storms along the coast.
The most significant local event is the Festival de la Trova Lírica (typically March or April) in the city of Las Tunas, celebrating the province's strong tradition of trova music and poetry. The Carnival of Las Tunas (late July/early August) is a vibrant multi-day street celebration with music, dance, and floats. The Feria del Libro (Book Fair, usually February) brings literary events and is one of the province's notable cultural dates.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The province is connected by the Carretera Central, Cuba's main east-west highway, which passes through Las Tunas city. Viazul buses stop in Las Tunas on the Santiago–Havana route; from there you can reach the city centre by taxi or bici-taxi in a few minutes.
Between towns, local ómnibus and camiones (trucks converted for passenger service) connect the capital with Puerto Padre (~70 km north, 1.5 hours), Manatí, Jobabo, and other settlements. Service is infrequent and schedules are informal — ask locals. Taxis and colectivos (shared taxis) can be arranged through casas particulares for roughly CUC 1–2 per person for shorter hops.
The province has no railway station of major significance for tourists, though the Ferrocarril de Cuba line passes through. A rental car or hired driver is the most practical way to explore beyond the capital. Distances are modest: Las Tunas city to Puerto Padre is about 70 km; to Jobabo roughly 50 km south; to Amancio about 80 km southwest.

WhatsAppCuisine
The cuisine in Las Tunas is traditional eastern Cuban — hearty, simple, and centred on rice, beans, pork, and root vegetables. Signature dishes include congrí (rice cooked with red beans), tostones (fried plantain slices), lechón asado (slow-roasted pork), and ajiaco criollo (a rich stew of meats, root vegetables, and corn). Fresh seafood appears in coastal towns like Puerto Padre and Manatí.
In Las Tunas city, paladares (private restaurants) around the main plaza and along the Carretera Central serve full meals for CUC 5–12. The Casa de la Trova often has food alongside music. In smaller towns, cafeterías and state-run restaurants offer basic but filling meals for a few dollars or in CUP. Vegetarian options are limited — beans, rice, fried plantains, and salads are the fallback. Tropical fruit (mango, guava, papaya) is plentiful and cheap when in season.
Culture & Festivals
Las Tunas province has a strong literary and musical tradition. The city is a centre for trova — the poetic, guitar-driven songwriting tradition of eastern Cuba — and the annual Festival de la Trova Lírica (March/April) draws musicians and poets from across the region.
The Carnival of Las Tunas (late July/early August) is the province's biggest street celebration, with comparsas (dance troupes), conga drums, floats, and several days of open-air festivities. The Feria del Libro (February) is a cultural highlight, with book launches, readings, and panel discussions.
The province is also known for its public sculpture: the capital city has over 100 sculptures and murals displayed in parks, along boulevards, and in public buildings — the largest open-air sculpture collection in Cuba. Local artisans produce leather goods, woven items, and traditional wooden crafts.
