Gibara

Holguín, Cuba

Why visit Gibara?

Gibara is a small coastal town on Cuba's northeastern shore in Holguín Province, known locally as the "White Village" for its whitewashed colonial buildings. Founded in 1817, the town sits on a sheltered bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and has long been an important fishing port. Gibara gained international recognition as the host of the Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre (International Low-Budget Film Festival), founded by Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás in 2003.

The town retains a quiet, unhurried character far removed from Cuba's resort destinations. Its historic centre features well-preserved 19th-century architecture, a striking waterfront promenade, and a handful of cultural venues. The surrounding landscape includes limestone hills, tobacco fields, and pristine coastline.

Gibara has a tropical climate with a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. The best time to visit is during the dry months, particularly when the film festival takes place (usually in April). Hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk in September and October.
