Why visit Sagua de Tanamo?

Sagua de Tánamo is a small city in northeastern Holguín Province, located in a valley near the river of the same name, close to the border with Guantánamo Province. The town has a population of approximately 20,000 and is surrounded by mountains, forests, and agricultural land. The area has a rugged, frontier character, with the Sierra Cristal to the south and the coast to the north.

Historically, Sagua de Tánamo was an important sugar-processing centre. The surrounding mountains were a theatre of guerrilla operations during the Cuban Revolution, and the area retains strong connections to that history. The town has a compact centre with colonial-era buildings and a lively market.

Tropical climate, with heavy rainfall especially in the mountainous areas. Dry season runs November–April. The best time to visit is during the dry months.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Frank País Airport (HOG) in Holguín, about 90 km west. Taxis cost around CUC 60–80. No direct flights.

By Car / Road

Sagua de Tánamo is about 90 km east of Holguín via the coastal road through Antilla and the northern coast (approximately 2 hours). From Baracoa, the drive is about 80 km northwest via a rough mountain road (2–3 hours). Road conditions are variable; a 4WD is recommended. Local bus services are infrequent.

The town centre is compact and walkable. Bici-taxis and horse-drawn carriages serve the main streets. For excursions into the surrounding mountains, arrange a taxi or 4WD vehicle.
