About Mayari

Mayarí is a small city in southeastern Holguín Province, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Cristal mountains near the eastern shore of the Bay of Nipe, Cuba's largest natural bay. The town has a population of approximately 30,000 and serves as the municipal seat for a vast rural area that includes mountains, rivers, and some of eastern Cuba's most unspoiled landscapes.

Mayarí's history is tied to the sugar industry and later to nickel mining, which remains an important economic activity in the region. The area gained historical significance during the Cuban Revolution — guerrilla forces operated extensively in the Sierra Cristal and surrounding hills. The region is also home to indigenous Taíno archaeological sites.

The climate is tropical, with a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. The mountainous areas receive more rainfall and can be cooler, especially at night. The best time to visit is during the dry months, December through March.
