Rafael Freyre
Holguín, Cuba
Why visit Rafael Freyre?
Rafael Freyre is a small town in northern Holguín Province, situated between the provincial capital and the coast. Named after a local independence hero, the town has a population of approximately 5,000 and serves as a gateway to the Guardalavaca beach resort area. The surrounding landscape is a mix of low hills, sugarcane fields, and increasingly, tourism-related development.
The town itself has a modest central square and a handful of colonial-era buildings. Its strategic location on the main road between Holguín and the northern coast beaches makes it a common transit point. The area around Rafael Freyre was historically a sugar-growing region, and the remains of old sugar mills dot the countryside.
Tropical climate with dry season November–April and rainy season May–October. The proximity to the coast provides some sea breezes.
