Banes
Holguín, Cuba
Why visit Banes?
Banes is a small inland town in Holguín Province, notable primarily as the birthplace of Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, who was born on a farm near the town on 13 August 1926. The town sits in a fertile valley surrounded by sugarcane fields and low hills, approximately 50 km west of Holguín. Banes has a population of around 20,000 and serves as a municipal seat with a relaxed, rural Cuban character.
The Museo Indocubano Baní, one of Cuba's most important archaeological museums, is located here, housing a remarkable collection of pre-Columbian artefacts from the Taíno and other indigenous peoples who inhabited the region before Spanish colonisation. The surrounding area features several sites connected to Castro's early life and the revolutionary history of Cuba.
Banes has a tropical climate with the dry season from November to April. The rainy season (May–October) brings afternoon thunderstorms and occasional tropical storms. The best months for visiting are December through March, when temperatures are warm but humidity is more moderate.
