Manzanillo

Granma, Cuba

Why visit Manzanillo?

Manzanillo is a port city on the Gulf of Guacanayabo in southern Granma Province, with a population of approximately 130,000. Founded in 1784, the city has a long history as a sugar and coffee shipping port. Its waterfront setting, colourful colonial architecture, and Afro-Cuban cultural traditions give it a distinct character among Cuban provincial cities.

The city played a role in the Cuban Revolution — the yacht Granma, carrying Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries from Mexico in 1956, landed at a beach south of Manzanillo. The surrounding area includes sugar plantations, fishing villages, and access to the Cabo Cruz lighthouse and Desembarco del Granma National Park.

Tropical climate with dry season November–April and rainy season May–October. The coastal location provides sea breezes, but summers are hot and humid. The best months to visit are December through March.
