Media Luna
Granma, Cuba
Why visit Media Luna?
Media Luna is a small town in southern Granma Province, located between Bayamo and the coast. The town has a population of approximately 5,000 and is surrounded by sugarcane fields and agricultural land. Media Luna is known as the birthplace of the Castro family — Ángel Castro y Argiz, father of Fidel and Raúl Castro, was born in the nearby village of Lugo in Galicia, Spain, but the family farm (Finca Las Manacas) where Fidel was born is in the Birán area, while the Castro family had significant connections to the Media Luna area.
The town has a modest central square and a few blocks of low-rise buildings. The surrounding landscape is typical of southern Granma — flat agricultural terrain with sugarcane and cattle.
Tropical climate with dry season November–April and rainy season May–October.
