Vertientes

Camagüey, Cuba

Why visit Vertientes?

Vertientes is a small inland town in southern Camagüey Province, situated about 50 km south of the provincial capital. With a population of roughly 10,000, it is a quiet agricultural centre surrounded by sugar cane fields and cattle ranches. The town takes its name from the natural springs (vertientes) that flow in the area, feeding into the Caonao River.

Vertientes has a modest but genuine character. The town played a role in Cuba's sugar economy and retains the feel of a typical Cuban agricultural settlement. The climate is tropical, with hot summers (30–33°C) and a rainy season from May to October. The best time to visit is from November to April when temperatures are slightly cooler and rainfall is lower.

The layout follows the standard Cuban provincial pattern: a central park, a church, municipal buildings, and low-rise residential streets spreading outward. The surrounding countryside is flat and heavily cultivated.
