Minas

Camagüey, Cuba

Why visit Minas?

Minas is a small inland town in northeastern Camagüey Province, located about 55 km north of the provincial capital. With a population of around 10,000, it is a quiet agricultural centre set amid rolling terrain and sugar cane fields. The town should not be confused with Minas in Uruguay or other places of the same name; this is Minas, Camagüey, Cuba.

The town has historical ties to the sugar industry and to Cuba's independence struggles. The surrounding area saw guerrilla activity during the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and the final War of Independence (1895–1898). The climate is tropical, with hot summers (30–33°C) and a rainy season from May to October. The cooler, drier months from November to April offer the most comfortable conditions.

Minas follows the typical layout of a Cuban provincial town: a central park, a church, municipal buildings, and modest residential streets. The surrounding countryside is a mix of sugar cane cultivation and cattle ranching, with some wooded hills to the north.
