Esmeralda
Camagüey, Cuba
Why visit Esmeralda?
Esmeralda is a small town in northwestern Camagüey Province, located about 60 km northwest of the provincial capital. With a population of around 8,000, it is a quiet agricultural settlement set in flat, sugar-cane-growing countryside. The town has a laid-back, unremarkable character typical of Cuba's smaller provincial centres, and sees virtually no international visitors.
Esmeralda was founded during the colonial era and grew as a stop along the route connecting Camagüey with the northern coast. The economy is based on sugar cane cultivation and cattle ranching. The climate is tropical, with hot summers (30–33°C) and a rainy season from May to October. The drier months from November to April are the most pleasant for visiting.
The town follows the standard layout of a Cuban provincial centre: a central park, a church, civic buildings, and low-rise residential streets. The surrounding flatlands are devoted to agriculture.
