Cot

Cartago, Costa Rica

Why visit Cot?

Cot is a small district in the Oreamuno Canton of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, located on the lower slopes of Irazú Volcano just north of Cartago city. The area is primarily residential and agricultural, with a mix of suburban development spilling over from Cartago and traditional highland farming. Cot's position on the volcano road makes it a stopover point for visitors heading to Irazú Volcano National Park.

The district takes its name from a local indigenous term. The area has been settled since colonial times, when the fertile volcanic soils attracted farmers. Today, Cot balances its agricultural heritage with growing suburban character as Cartago's urban area expands northward toward the volcano.

Elevation is approximately 1,400–1,600 m, with a cool, pleasant climate averaging 16–22°C. The dry season (December to April) is the best time for volcano visits and outdoor activities. Rainy season brings regular afternoon showers and occasional morning cloud cover.
